Paintings by Poon Chun Wah

The University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by the notable Hong Kong contemporary artist, Poon Chun Wah.

Born in Guangzhou in 1936, Poon initially trained as an architect but developed an interest in a wide range of artistic media after moving to Hong Kong in 1959, including photography, printmaking, oil painting and ink painting. The latter, for which he studied under the master, Lui Shou-kwan (1919-1975), has become his favoured and best-known medium. His works have been extensively exhibited around the world, including several solo exhibitions in Hong Kong. In 1985 he received the Hong Kong Urban Council Fine Arts Award in recognition of his artistic achievements.

Poon portrays vast and atmospheric landscapes, some in particularly dramatic aerial views. His earlier compositions tend to be more geometrical and rational, with an element of precision that recalls his architectural training. His later work concentrates on exploring the medium of Chinese brush and ink, as well as traditional pictorial elements and spatial organizations of the landscape genre. Poon's diligent outdoor studies and extensive travels have led to a more profound understanding of nature, which is reflected in his sensitive renderings of light and atmospheric changes. Poon also paints works using simplified brushstrokes and splashes of ink and colour, which are reminiscent of Lui Shou-kwan's semi-abstract style.

This exhibition will showcase around fifty of Poon's more recent landscape paintings in brush and ink, most of which will be on display to the public for the first time.

The Museum's opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Sundays 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. The Museum is closed on public holidays. Admission is free. All are welcome.
