Seen together, this works help illustrate the special connection that exists between France and Japan, with artistic influence flowing both ways.

comunicato stampa

Paris has enthralled and inspired countless numbers of exceptional photographers: Atget, Cartier Bresson, Lartigue, Doisneau and Brassai to name a few. And a surprising number of Japanese artists have made pilgrimages to the City of Light, aptly named if you happen to be a photographer. Whether it is that exquisite glowing light, the monumental architecture, the convivial sidewalk society, the elegant natives, or simple the wine-- a large number of Japanese photographers have produced significant works while visiting or living in Paris.

The list of Japanese photographers, shooting pictures in Paris, is extensive. Daido Moriyama created an exquisite body of work, some of which will be displayed in this exhibition. Toru Kogure roamed the cobbled streets with his wooden 8x10 in the 1970’s, following in the footsteps of Atget. Jun Shiraoka lived in Paris, and shot pictures with a unique sensibility that is often only possible from an outsider’s point of view. And then there is the recent work of Mieko Tadokoro who, technically, doesn’t use a camera at all. Her fascinating pictures are made with a box with a hole in the side, a pinhole camera, which yields a photograph rich in depth and detail.

White Room Gallery has the pleasure of presenting these varied, fascinating visions of Paris. Seen together, they help illustrate the special connection that exists between France and Japan, with artistic influence flowing both ways. This is a wonderful opportunity to see how this diverse group of photographers has each brought their own distinctive sensibility and vision to this quixotic city. Many of these photographs have never been displayed, making this an excellent chance to see, in one place, the work of many of Japan’s premier contemporary photographers.
