Conciliation

Hanli Becker, Linden

As its title suggests, this show hopes to consolidate some of the disparate elements from the previous three events: Negotiation, Intercession, and Arbitration. The nature of the project encourages interventions, installations and performance and artists have been asked to produce new works for each section of the show.

The Negotiate project at the Johannesburg Art Gallery concludes in November with the final show Conciliation.

Negotiate is a project in four parts hosted by the Johannesburg Art Gallery in honour of South Africa’s Ten Years of Democracy Celebration. Focusing on young artists, the project has provided a forum for the exploration of new strategies in art production, disengaged from standard exhibition format and taking on an ephemeral, mutable element. Each show in the series has its own unique slant, allowing for an ever evolving impression.

The project as a whole investigates notions of ‘negotiation’ within the framework of the Democracy Celebrations. It foregrounds a new generation of artists speaking from a position informed by the experience of ten years of democracy, and not as influenced by the living memories of apartheid.

The first exhibition, Intercession, consisted of performative artworks and installations throughout the gallery space. The gallery, its location in Joubert Park in the centre of Johannesburg, and its established history and exhibition structures, served to a great extent as the starting point for many of the artists participating. The exhibition used the notion of ‘intercession’ as ‘acting on behalf of another’, and many of the artists concentrated on its connotations to prayer. As the first show in the project the curators encouraged a relatively quiet and subtle approach, focussing on delicate interventions into the gallery context.

The second exhibition of the project, shifted from the ideas around Intercession, to Intervention which interrogated the gallery in an increasingly physical manner. The show incorporated more performative works, as well as more emphatic interventions within the permanent collection.

Arbitration, the third exhibition, embraced the tendency toward event based art. Moving away from traditional production, this show existed almost in its entirety in the intangible, leaving very little presence in the gallery after the opening night. In Arbitration artists presented video, fashion, performance, as well as several project based initiatives running at various times throughout the month.

The last show of the project, Conciliation, opens on Saturday 6 November at 18:00. As its title suggests, this show hopes to consolidate some of the disparate elements from the previous three events. The nature of the project encourages interventions, installations and performance and artists have been asked to produce new works for each section of the show. Along with the final pieces concluding the series that many artists have been producing for the duration of the project the exhibition will also incorporate new artists participating in the project for the first time. Artists include Kathryn Smith, Galerie Puta, and Doung Anwar Jahangeer among many others.
