Rings of Saturn is an exhibition of new work by four young Glasgow-based artists. The exhibition consists of video work by Maurice Doherty, sculptural work by Mick Peter, a sculptural intervention by Owen Piper and a sound piece and drawings by David Sherry. The artists’ work is linked by a sense of the absurd, humour and irreverence.

Maurice Doherty takes a minimalist approach to art making, using simple visual devices to engage the viewer in his video and photographic works. ‘I like to present something that is essentially simplistic, but which potentially emanates into the most complex thoughts in our psyches’.

Mick Peter usually makes groups of works, often destabilising them by pitching clashing reference points and methods. Recent works have taken the form of posters and sculptures such as a large-scale concrete piece that examined the building method of faceless public artworks.

Owen Piper often constructs replicas of existing objects in alternative materials, creating a space where the boundaries between sculpture, furniture and abstract structures are blurred. Often employing domestic materials, (clingfilm wrapping for example), Piper alters and amplifies the final construction, so that it speaks about a different scale.

David Sherry says of his practice ‘My work revolves around themes of human relationships and social convention. By applying mild altercations to my own life I investigate settled patterns of communication and the systematic processes of day to day life. Very often my work evolves from a series of drawings and takes a more narrative theme through performance and video pieces.’

INFORMATION ON THE ARTISTS
Maurice Doherty graduated from MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 2001 and exhibited in ‘Ritual to Romance’ at Catalyst Arts, Belfast and ‘Diplomatic Immunity’ at Hunter Gallery, New York. In 2004 he exhibited at The Projecktraum des Kunstraum, Kreutzberg during the Berlin Biennale and Three Walls Gallery, Chicago during the Chicago Art Fair.

Mick Peter is currently completing a Ph.D. at Glasgow School of Art and has had solo exhibitions at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow, 2003; Glasgow Sculpture Studios, 2004; Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, 2000 and 2002. He was shortlisted for New Contemporaries in 2000. In 2003 he received an award from the British Council for exhibitions in France: ‘Nursery World’ at Jennifer Flay Gallery, Paris and ‘Special Dedicace’ at Musee Departemental, Chateau de Rouchechouart.

Owen Piper graduated from MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 2003 with MFA exhibitions at Tramway, Glasgow and Witte de With Museum, Rotterdam, Holland. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Kaiserpassage 16/21a, Karlsruhe, Germany, 2004; Inbox: Glasgow, Centro Nacional de las Artes, Mexico City, 2004; Busco Similar, Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, 2003.

David Sherry was shortlisted for the Becks Futures prize in 2003 and has had solo exhibitions at Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, 2004; Schnittraum, Cologne, Germany, 2003 and Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, 2003. Recently he has also participated in group projects such as ‘I don’t know my name’, Tart Contemporary, San Francisco, 2004; ‘I’m trying to tell you I love you’, Kunstraum Kreutzberg, Berlin and ‘Zenomap’ at the Venice Biennale, 2003.
