Los Angeles. His installation in the Museum will fill the entire building and provide an overview of the many series of artworks he has developed over the years. Highlights include a 20-foot-tall glass Tower, a Chandelier, a cascading wall of Persians, and a Reed installation.
'My work to this day revolves around a simple set of circumstances: fire,
molten glass, human breath, spontaneity, centrifugal force, and gravity.'
Dale Chihuly
The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University is pleased
to present Chihuly: Los Angeles, a special exhibition by artist Dale
Chihuly, from November 21, 2004, through March 20, 2005.
Over the past three decades, Dale Chihuly has established himself as one of
the world¹s most dynamic and inventive contemporary artists. He has
transformed the medium of glass into a major art form, producing dramatic
works that range in scope from intimate vessels to monumental public
sculptures. Overflowing with color and light, his vibrant blown glass
sculptures elicit a sense of joy, awe, and wonder.
His installation at the Weisman Museum will fill the entire building and
provide an overview of the many series of artworks he has developed over the
years. Highlights include a 20-foot-tall glass Tower, a Chandelier, a
cascading wall of Persians, and a Reed installation.
Chihuly created many of the artworks specifically for the Weisman Museum,
and selected others to be reset into new compositions that respond to the
museum¹s architecture. These installations together become an environment
that transforms the interior space of the museum and powerfully provides the
viewer with an unforgettable experience.
The exhibition will also offer a view of the artist¹s other signature forms.
These will include examples of his Baskets, Seaforms, Piccolo Venetians,
Macchia, and Ikebana. Additionally, a special installation of 28 drawings
will reveal a different creative process, apart from Chihuly¹s artworks in
glass.
A video display will show continuous films of Chihuly at work, creating
glass and installing his artwork around the world. Books, DVDs, and related
material on Chihuly will be available in the Museum shop.
Chihuly: Los Angeles at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art is the first
major exhibition of Dale Chihuly¹s art in a Los Angeles museum.
Chihuly: Los Angeles is a citywide, three-venue celebration of Chihuly¹s
work. Concurrent exhibitions will also be held at L.A. Louver in Venice and
Frank Lloyd Gallery in Santa Monica. Each location will offer a different
aspect of the artist¹s work:
