Stella Vine is a contemporary figurative painter, often drawn to lost, fragile figures and her paintings act as mirrors – to life, to her self, to the observer: "I like to make art about the life around me, and life is full of horrific things" Vine says.

Vine has been attacked for choosing controversial subjects in her works. She was pushed into the centre of media spin and aspects of her life story were echoed in her paintings subjects. Vine is attracted to those mysterious, iconic figures, whose images of darkling lives and deaths, that were of young age and beautiful facades, took hold in our collective consciousness and who became reflections of Vine's own autobiographical story: "If the lip had dripped when I'd put paint on I would have liked it. That suggests the terrible sadness of the life that people go through… I see myself in them".

Charles Saatchi had bought some of Vine's paintings in early 2004, along with a portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales, with the large red graffiti-style text: "Hi Paul, can you come over I'm really frightened". That piece was shown at "New Blood" exhibition, at the "Saatchi & Saatchi" Gallery, London and pitched Vine into the heart of the media's attention.
