JODI

Spacex, Exeter

Artist-duo JODI are inspired by the very things we hate about computers: Viruses, glitches, pop-up windows. Out of the misery of the glitch, the unpredictable pair create artwork of a terrifying beauty, laced with a healthy dose of silliness. Their exhibition features new work and the inimitable My%Desktop, which made a splash in NYC last year as the first true computer-art masterpiece.

Artist-duo JODI are inspired by the very things we hate about computers: Viruses, glitches, pop-up windows. Out of the misery of the glitch, the unpredictable pair create artwork of a terrifying beauty, laced with a healthy dose of silliness. Their exhibition, on tour from FACT, features new work and the inimitable My%Desktop, which made a splash in NYC last year as the first true computer-art masterpiece.

Most people have had problems using a computer at some point in their life - a button that didn't do what it said it would; a floppy disk or CD that stopped working; an email that contained a computer virus. The anxieties, panics, and disasters that even a simple glitch can cause are the all-too -familiar hangovers of the hi-tech era. In their first UK solo exhibition, the Netherlands-based artist duo JODI poke fun at the mistakes made by computers and their human users. Known and feared worldwide for their artistic misuse of machinery, JODI's work is inspired by the very things we hate most about technology.

My %Desktop, a video artwork, earned international acclaim with its premiere last year at the Eyebeam Centre in New York. The video installation shows large-scale computer screens violently erupting, windows opening and closing as if controlled by some mad unseen force, creating hypnotising sound and visuals. In addition to My %Desktop, JODI present a new work, Max Payne Cheats-Only Gallery. In this video installation Max, the main character from a video game popular for its shoot-em-up violence, explores the whimsical side of his personality. He wanders film noir-style sets without regard for his mission, searching for the spaces where the logic of the game breaks down.
