Exhibition and architectural evaluation

KW temporary entrance 2005
P.S.1/MoMA Young Architects Program 2000 – 2004

Since the KW moved into the then extremely dilapidated complex of buildings at Auguststrasse 69 in the early 1990s, two central new building measures were carried out in addition to the renovation of the substance of the old buildings: the exhibition hall designed by Hans Düttmann and “Cafe Bravo”, designed by Dan Graham and Nalbach & Nalbach. But the monument protection law and finances meant that, in renovating the building, the original extensive plans to restructure the area of the institution’s entrance to the Auguststrasse were not carried out.

The competition “KW temporary entrance 2005”, in the form of an architectural evaluation, now addresses this situation. The competition aims at a temporary architectural intervention through the work of an outstanding young architects’ office that will make the KW more recognizable from the Auguststrasse. The project was initiated and will be carried out with the generous support of the owner of the KW’s building and of the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin and in cooperation with the “Young Architects Program” of P.S.1 / MoMA.

A body of international experiments has suggested a total of 35 architects’ offices in Berlin; five of these will be selected and commissioned to work out proposals for a temporary remodeling of the entry area of the KW. The results of this work will be presented to the public in the exhibition 2 x 5. An international jury (comprising Paola Antonelli, curator, Department of Architecture and Design, MoMA, NY; Tina DiCarlo, curator, Department of Architecture and Design, MoMA, NY; Amy Smith Stewart, curator, P.S.1/MoMA, NY; Johanne Nalbach, architect, Berlin; Zvi Hecker, architect, Berlin; Anselm Franke, curator KW Berlin; Erik Steinbrecher, architect/artist, Berlin) will choose one of the designs and recommend its implementation; the project is then to be completed in Spring 2005. The jury’s decision will be announced at a press conference at 12 noon on the day of the exhibition opening. The participating architects’ offices are: Barkow Leibinger Architekten and heide von beckerath alberts architekten; deadline - Matthew Griffin / Britta Jürgens; Grüntuch Ernst Architekten; ifau and Jesko Fezer; and INSTANT - Jörg Stollmann / Dirk Hebel.

Along with the five designs, the exhibition 2 x 5 will also present the last five years of the Young Architects Program” of the P.S.1/MoMA. Shown will be documentations of the designs realized at the P.S.1 "Dunescape 2000" by SHoP/Sharples Holden Pasquarelli; "subWave 2001" by ROY; "Playa Urbana/ Urban Beach 2002" by William E. Massie; "Light Wing 2003“ by EMERGENT_Tom Wiscombe; and "Canopy 2004" by nARCHITECTS.

With the friendly support of the Embassy of the United States of America and Lumin Visual Technologies.
