A solo exhibition by Mayumi Terada.
Somewhere between the realms of reality and imagination lies the
photographic art of Mayumi Terada. She has constructed her own little world
out of balsa wood and Styrofoam, clay and fabric, and then left it to our
imagination to ponder the implications of her creations. “I always try to
find out and express an image of space that we can possess in common,†she
says.
Ms. Terada builds diminutive domestic sets she calls ‘dollhouses’, then
photographs them. Her large monochrome pictures show a world filled with
scenes and objects completely familiar to anyone living in our Western
culture, yet eerily devoid of human presence. Thus a soup plate sitting on
a table, an empty trash bucket, or a shower stall with water droplets still
lingering on the glass door have a mysterious sense of reality. We know
these are constructions, but can’t help wondering who might have just
emerged from that shower, who left the bed wrinkled and tossed, who’s
suitcases are packed and waiting. Yet no matter how seductive these
speculations, we must not forget that the real subject of her photographs is
light--streaming into windows and even causing diaphanous window hangings to
billow into an empty room.
White Room Gallery welcomes you to visit this latest exhibit by one of Japan
’s most prolific artists. Ms. Terada’s large-scale photographs and
sculptural installations have been widely exhibited in recent years in
museums and galleries stretching from New York to her native Tokyo. We are
proud to present this collection of photographs of this most versatile
artist.
