comunicato stampa

The CCCB presents the exhibition the BRUGUERA HUMOUR FACTORY, curated by the journalists Jaume Vidal and Carles Santamaria, which will be open to visitors at the CCCB from 20 January to 10 April 2005. The exhibition is a coproduction of the CCCB, the Fundación Sa Nostra of Palma de Mallorca, the Espacio Cultural Mira de Pozuelo (Madrid) and the Centro Cultural Montehermoso in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The Bruguera Humour Factory immerses itself in the comic production of the Barcelona publisher, Bruguera, with the aim of highlighting how this publishing house developed a humorous comic based on everyday life. In order to do so, it will include a selection of 75 original comic strips that have been conserved in the archives of Ediciones B or loaned by the artists themselves and their families.

The Bruguera comics were both a portrait and a form of entertainment of Spanish society in the post-war years of autarchy and development policies. The 1940s and early 1950s saw the emergence of characters such as Carpanta, Zipi & Zape, Don Pío, Doña Urraca, Las Hermanas Gilda, Carioco, La Familia Cebolleta, El doctor Cataplasma, Don Furcio Buscabollos and El reportero Tribulete. In the 1960s they were joined by Anacleto, Pepe el Hincha, Rue 13 del Percebe, La abuelita Paz, La alegre pandilla, Agamenón, Sir Tim O’Theo & Patson, Pepe Gotera & Otilio, El botones Sacarino, La familia Churumbel and Súper López. Not forgetting the inseparable Mortadelo and Filemón, created in 1958, who became the great best-sellers of the Spanish comic world.

The exhibition offers a typology of Bruguera characters to help us to understand them better. Although they were created at different times and in different circumstances, they can be classified according to narrative, aesthetic and thematic patterns that repeat themselves.

The Bruguera school also created its own characteristic kinds of style. The exhibition dissects some of the narrative keys to the strips: narrative structure (1. Presentation of a desire or a challenge; 2. Wishes and hopes; 3. Final frustration in the face of impossibility); typical scenes that are repeated time and time again in all comics; and the language of the Bruguera comics with its typical expressions (recurrent vocabulary, etc.) and the graphic resources used by the humorists (onomatopoeia, symbols, etc.).

The Bruguera factory created the Bruguera humour that lives on in popular memory and the imaginary of the Spanish society of the 21st century. One example are the television series now being shown; they pick up not only the archetypes developed by the Bruguera characters, but also a whole lifestyle, with plots that are governed by botched jobs, havoc, misunderstandings and ultimate catastrophe.
