The Italian work 'viatico' derives from the Roman "viaticum" and initially named all things, which were taken along on a journey, like provisions and victuals. Another meaning was and still is comfort and encouragement for a project. With the 'viaticum' the catholic church is offering the last sacrament for the last journey. The ancient Romans also called their loot 'viaticum'.

So 'viatico' is not only what you take with you starting a journey, but also what you bring home from a journey. In 1999 the exhibition project 'Viatico di Arte e Critica' was conceived in Rome by Roberto Annecchini, Patrizia Mania e Domenico Scudero. It was an attempt to research the relationship between an art open to critique and a critique participating in the process of art-making.
Home Abroad will develop this dialogue by changing the perspective. The show in Frankfurt does not primarily deal with the correlations between art and critique. In November, the traditional month of penitence and mourning, artists and critics from Germany, Britain, Italy, Australia and the USA will be invited likewise to concern themselves with the various meanings of "viatico" - be it the luggage, last sacrament or loot.
The exhibition 'viatico [vi'a:tiko]' will integrate examples from the Roman show and will be accompanied by evening events.
A catalogue will document the project.
