Exhibition includes proposals by students for environment art installations; works by Lifetime Learning Institute members; and a selection of works donated to the Institute by internationally acclaimed artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude

The Lifetime Learning Institute (LLI) at Bard College presents an exhibition at the Bertelsmann Campus Center, on view from February 3 through February 15. The exhibition, curated by LLI member Rosalie Rossi, includes proposals by 10 Bard students for temporary environment art installations-inspired by the work of internationally acclaimed artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude; works by LLI members; and signed supergraphics by Christo and Jeanne-Claude of works in progress-including The Gates and Over The River. Free and open to the public, the exhibition will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the George Ball Lounge.

The student proposals are supported by funds that were raised from the exhibition and auction last fall of signed supergraphics by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. These works illustrate the artists' interest in combining art and the environment and were donated to benefit students with related interests. Each of the 10 students who are included in the current exhibition will receive a small grant; three of the students will receive $500 to assist in the creation of works to be temporarily installed on campus during the months of April and May of this year.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude's, The Gates, Central Park, New York, will be unfurled February 12, 2005 (weather permitting) with 7,500 saffron-colored gates placed at 12 foot intervals throughout 28 miles of pedestrian walkways from 59th Street to 110th Street and from Central Park West to Fifth Avenue. Work is now in progress. Christo and Jeanne-Claude's work has been described as a democratic art, as the installations are free and open for all to see. The artists fund their work through the sale of their original art, as they do not accept sponsors or government grants.

From February 19 through April 3, another exhibition of Christo and Jeanne Claude's supergraphics, curated by Rosalie Rossi, will be on view at the Poughkeepsie Art Museum, 214 Main Street. These will be available for sale, benefiting the Poughkeepsie Art Museum. Rossi, along with Albert Shahinian, director of museum, will also curate a solo show, Windows and Lights: Work by Rosalie C. Rossi, to be held concurrently at the museum.

The Lifetime Learning Institute, sponsored by Bard College, provides opportunities for actively retired persons to share their love of learning in a setting that fosters the exchange of ideas and experiences. The Institute is affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network and offers noncredit, noncompetitive courses taught by volunteers on the Bard College campus. Classes are held during the spring and fall semesters; there is also a January-February minisession. Special events include speakers programs, cultural trips, moderated panels, concerts, and art exhibits. In addition to study and discussion, members are encouraged to participate actively in all aspects of the operation of the Institute. Membership is open to all adults of retirement age residing in Dutchess, Ulster, and Columbia Counties of New York State.

For further information call the LLI office at 845-758-7514. Further information about the artists is available at http://www.christojeanneclaude.net.
