Breaking the 4th Wall

Ise Cultural Foundation, New York

Hors Cadrage. The exhibition explores the idea of the artificially created border, whether it be a frame in an artist’s work or other socio-politically and culturally created borders created in the mind. Hors cadre is a term used in French cinema that commonly translates to 'off screen' in English. However, its literal translation can be deemed as 'beyond the frame. ISE CULTURAL FOUNDATION is pleased to present the exhibition, Breaking the 4th Wall: Hors Cadrage. The exhibition explores the idea of the artificially created border, whether it be a frame in an artist’s work or other socio-politically and culturally created borders created in the mind.

Hors cadre is a term used in French cinema that commonly translates to “off screen” in English. However, its literal translation can be deemed as “beyond the frame.” The works of artists ON/Megumi Akiyoshi, Joonhyun Kim, Shin-il Kim, Stephan Knuesel & Orrawadee Momo Vilaitanarak and Thuan Vu play with the notion of that which is beyond the frame, cutting across the traditional notion of the 4th wall in cinema and theatre, where viewer and object are in strict separation. Instead, the artists call on the viewer to interact, to imagine what may lay beyond traditionally conceived ideas of the art object as finite subject .

Like the translation of the term “hors cadrage,” or beyond centering or framing, their works are not able to be translated with exactitude. Instead, they are within and without a space that contain no borders except those which are imposed by the mind, thus breaking the 4th wall, and allowing for the imagination to reside in perpetual creation and potentiality.
