Drawing is central to Maybank's work. Each painting begins as a series of overlapping forms drawn in outline on sheets of tracing paper. Using the drawings as templates, the artist builds up these images on the canvas in latex, between layers of acrylic paint.
Local artist Hannah Maybank will be returning to Walsall to present her first major exhibition at The New Art Gallery Walsall.
Hannah Maybank grew up in Walsall and attended Walsall College of Arts and Technology before studying in Liverpool and at the Royal College of Art in London. Her new exhibition at The New Art Gallery will bring together both recent paintings and specially commissioned work.
Drawing is central to Hannah Maybank’s work. Each painting begins as a series of overlapping forms drawn in outline on sheets of tracing paper. Using the drawings as templates, the artist builds up these images on the canvas in latex, between layers of acrylic paint. A sense of depth emerges, as successive layers of latex and paint make individual elements advance or recede from the painting’s surface, the outlines of the image becoming less distinct with each layer of paint.
