Photography in the context of modern and contemporary art
The Collections of the IAC-FRAC Rhone-Alpes and the Musee d'Art Moderne de
Saint-Etienne Metropole
Between February and May 2005, the Institut d'art contemporain,
Villeurbanne-Lyon, and the Musee d'Art Moderne, Saint-Etienne Metropole,
in partnership, are presenting a large survey from their photographic
collections (11 February - 22 May at the Iac Villeurbanne; 10 February -
10 April at the Musee d'Art Moderne Saint-Etienne).
The two exhibitions provide a historic survey of photographic production
from its pioneering years to its actuality, each with a particular
viewpoint: Martine Dancer, the exhibition curator at the Musee d'Art
Moderne, presents the long development of photography as an artistic
discipline in its own right, including also the dynamics of distribution
of the photographic print (in magazines, artists' books and portfolios).
Dirk Snauwaert, who curates the exhibition at the IAC, looks at the
dialectic, during the 1980s, of how contemporary photography reclaimed its
own historical models and categories of avant-garde use of photography.
This question was at the heart of the exhibition Another objectivity,
which was co-curated by Jean-Francois Chevrier, who during those years
collected most of the works that now make up the FRAC photographic
collection.
The artists include Robert Adams, Appers, Dominique Auerbacher, Edouard
Baldus, Claude Batho, Antoine Beato, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Bisson Freres,
Blanc & Demilly, Christian Boltanski, Dirk Braeckman, Yves Bresson, Stuart

catalogues of both collections will be published online.
The IAC-FRAC Rhone-Alpes collection includes work by 194 artists. Out of a
total of 615 photographs, 425 were acquired by Jean-François Chevrier, and
these are on long term loan to the Musee d'Art Moderne in Saint-Etienne.
The MAM collection itself comprises 1,752 photographs by 121 artists.
