MOT has commissioned CULLINAN + RICHARDS, ARTLAB to make two new works for INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC. This exhibition will explore MOT’s and ARTLAB’s joint interest in exhibition strategies, independent organisations, autonomy of artworks, structures of propaganda and the aesthetics of 20th Century utopianism.
MOT will architecturally alter the gallery in order to facilA Curatorial project by Chris Hammonditate two rooms from ARTLAB’s ongoing work concerning an imagined Fascist Headquarters. This work involves the construction of a collection of furniture, emblazoned with the signature brown and white stripes inspired by the 1930’s Gio Ponti design for the Fiat Headquarters in Turin. On entering INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC you will find yourself in the Reception Room and from there the new citizen will be able to enter the Empire Room, a Kafkaesque in-between space with no apparent function. Here, amongst grand paintings of empire and under the imposing glare of a strip-light chandelier, the citizen is left to ponder the confusing cacophony of pseudo political trappings.
ARTLAB is Charlotte Cullinan and Jeanine Richards; their practice has included painting, sculpture, cinema, curation, drawing, installation and video. Since their conception in 1997 they have exhibited widely in the UK and Internationally, including solo exhibitions at Mobile Home and INIVA in London and CALTECH, Los Angeles.
