A film based exhibition
Detroit Contemporary
presents Out of
Focus, a film based
exhibition including
installations, film
projection, painting,
photography and
sound. The exhibition features the
works of Detroit area artists Mitch Cope
with constructions of painting and
photography on wood, Nicola Kuperus
exhibiting fashion-based photography,
Linda Soberman with an installation and
Edward P. Foley with photographs and
film projection.
The Artists/The Work
Inspired by solitude, time and decay,
Mitch Cope's wood pieces, exhibited in
the first floor gallery, are reflective
microcosms of Detroit's landscape.
Cope's constructions emphasize texture,
color and architectural proportion,
within a quiet and meditative
environment.
Exhibiting in the second floor gallery
Nicola Kuperus blurs the line between
fashion photography and fine art.
Kuperus' images include a sense of
mystery with her models cropped in stiff
and awkward positions.
Linda Soberman's installation in the
brick room gallery references post war
Poland and the aftermath of the Jewish
holocaust. The installation consists of
photo transfers of faces on windows
that suspend with a door from the
ceiling creating a ghostly presence.
Edward P Foley examines ordinary time
based events in nature with a film and
audio installation. Set in the coasts of
the Great Lakes as well as the Atlantic
and Pacific coasts of the United States
the film documents changes that take
place over a long period of time. Using
time-lapse photography to compress
the cycle of tide change, Foley attempts
to inform the viewer of the dramatic
impact tides have on coastal regions.
