Group Exhibition. Each artist comes from a different city; in these cities where we live, each of us has our own background, life experiences, sentiments, stories to tell. Cities are created by the needs, circumstances, chaos and imaginations of men; these artists set a meeting point, a city, to put together their portrayals of their own Monopolis.
Group Exhibition
Building bridges across Asia through art in the modern Asian metropolis -- Seven fresh and emerging artists from four major Asian cities come together in “Faces of Monopolisâ€, an exhibition of multidisciplinary artworks about the Asian metropolis and the individual imagination.
"Faces of Metropolis" is about building bridges and knitting networks in Asia. The artists first met in 2001 in an Art Camp in Korea. In 2003 an outdoor event was organized in Seoul by the Korean artists. This time the Singapore artists take their turn to organize this second installment, at The Substation Gallery. The last city in their itinerary in Asia will be Tokyo in 2007.
The artists are:
Chua Ka-Inn (Singapore)
Andree Weschler (Singapore/France)
Isamu Joseph Yamazoe (Japan)
Kazue Tomizawa (Japan)
Oh Mikyung (Korea)
Yoo Ria (Korea)
With Guest Artist: Cheng Guang Feng (China)
The opening of the exhibition on 23 March will feature performances by Cheng Guang Feng, Oh Mikyung and Andree Weschler.
The exhibition concept:
Mono means “one". "One" - single, alone, by oneself.
Each artist comes from a different city; in these cities where we live, each of us has our own background, life experiences, sentiments, stories to tell. What about the dreams, the fears, hopes and the daily grind that we invest in the spaces of these cities where our lives continue to unfold each day?
Cities are created by the needs, circumstances, chaos and imaginations of men; these artists set a meeting point, a city, to put together their portrayals of their own Monopolis.
About the Artists:
Chua Ka-Inn (Singapore)
Chua Ka-Inn has participated in group exhibitions in Korea and in Singapore. Working in installation/mixed-media, her themes are the exploration of her roles and needs of being in society and in her evolving world. Her method of work is to find a metaphoric object for her themes, to make a drawing in real space, to make a ‘picture’ that is “livingâ€.
Andree Weschler (Singapore/France)
Andree Weschler was formerly a French language teacher and later pursued her studies in Fine Arts at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia and the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. She is interested in the idea of a body socially cleaned and purified, a body treated like wax that is shaped, modeled and finally molded into a social form. Public Space is her preferred site of working and she has performed “The Hairy Virgin†in the underground of Seoul and in the city center of Singapore. She has mainly exhibited in Asia, notably in Singapore, Japan and Korea.
Isamu Joseph Yamazoe (Japan)
He is currently researching in art activities for children, and sometimes has exhibitions of his own art works. He constructs space and creates activities in simple but experimental ways, seeking to find beauty in his surroundings. He opened Hukazawa Art Laboratory in April 2003 and conducts workshops.

Kazue Tomizawa (Japan)
She makes three-dimensional works using things surrounding her like plants, cloth, paper, plastic bags and so on. She constructs atmospheric spaces that are infused with her experiences and a timeless/universal feel. She opened Hukazawa Art Laboratory/planting laboratory in April 2003. She runs greening activities and workshops.
Oh Mikyung (Korea)
She studied Fine Arts, Arts Theory and Arts Education in Ewha Women’s University and Hongik University of Seoul, and has exhibited in Korea and Japan. Her work is existential in its essence. At first she was interested in notions of “the Sublime†and “Motherhoodâ€, which are related to the “life†motif in Korean aesthetics. Now she is more interested in studying the notion of a socially molded "motherhood". She has worked with painting, drawing, photo, video, installation and performance.
Yoo Ria (Korea)
Yoo Ria graduated from Ewha Women’s University. She mainly exhibits in Korea and in Japan. She has been working on the theme of her childhood as a land of dreams.
Guest Artist: Cheng Guang Feng (China)
(at the opening performance of the exhibition on 23 March)
Cheng Guang Feng graduated from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. He is currently studying at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. He believes that for art to develop, it is necessary for every artist to give their support to one another and to exchange ideas. His 2 years' experience in Singapore spurred him to organize an international event called “Scratchâ€, in four cities in China. With an eagerness to explore and understand other cultures/countries, he would like to create bridges for international art and culture.
