The Robert Lesser Collection.
An exhibition of more than 250 robots and related gadgets, many of which have never been exhibited before and will be displayed with their original packaged that explores America's fascination with all things futuristic. The toys, which were on every child's holiday gift list, illustrate popular culture influenced by World War II, the space race, and the burgeoning international interest in technology. Those events, together with a general fascination with science fiction, created a craze among American children for innovative and imaginative toys with names like Machine Man, Moon Explorer, and Mr. Atomic. The robots in this exhibition mostly manufactured during Japan's postwar boom, range from the prewar era through the golden age of robots in the 1950s and '60s. They range in size from just a few inches tall to almost life-size.
