Saura Damas

A selection of 117 works, 115 on paper and two canvases from the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca, all created by Antonio Saura between 1949 and 1997. They range from his earliest and least-known Surrealist representations of women to works that deploy an expressionist idiom which subverts traditional figurative representation through the distortion of gesture.

Antonio Saura (Huesca, 1930 - Cuenca, 1998) is one of the most important of all Spanish artists of the second half of the 20th century. As a founding member of the El Paso group, his avant-garde aesthetic contributed to the revival of painting while maintaining figurative references. Saura used the image as the basis or pretext for action, working in an ironic and brutally direct idiom which characterised both his visual art and writings.

The present exhibition presents the image of woman through a number of different series. It includes faces, busts, reclining female forms and woman as landscape. We also see technicolour women, imaginary portraits, narratives, superimposed forms, heads and bodies, the latter mainly nude, tormented, monstrous and extreme. We see individual figures and others lost in the crowd: in all, a gallery of portraits in which woman is the constant and inexhaustible protagonist of Saura's iconographic repertoire.
