Purple mist, colors in music
by
Gloria Vallese.
Who loves real painting, the sensual pleasure that can be given by
the layering of colors and the strokes of drawing, will appreciate in full
the works here exibited, a summary of the artist's work in the last ten
years.
The paintings are non-representational, and so the observer must be one
able to enjoy the abstract rhythms and lines created by the hand, as one
does with music and its components: rhythm, harmony, melody. Who has
seen these works alongside with the related preparatory drawings and books
of sketches, has seen something fascinating: some naturalistic motive,
for example the pine-trees coating the side of a mountain or growing around
a lake, becoming by degrees the basic theme for abstract compositions.
Sheet after sheet, the tridimensional profile of a pine against the
sunlight becomes a flat, blazing halo, orange, or mauve and green, and
gives birth to the abstract music of one or more compositions, to a
"family" of paintings, which can count from one up to ten and more elements.
Each "family" or series may be created in a very short time, a couple of
days or weeks, and has a character of its own, different even from what
immediately precedes or follows.
Another fascinating thing to observe is that between the sketch and the
painting there can be a considerable interval, even of years. A landscape
can resurface and transform itself in painting even after ten years or
more, called to life by a fresh impression, according to the infinitely
complex and never casual mechanisms of memory. Some configurations can be
tracked backwards very deep, through longer or shorter intervals, up to
the years of the art school. At the same time, we observe evolution:
along the years, the artist has achieved maturity, perfected his technical
skill to the brilliant mature form of the last decade.
The themes also have changed in the last ten years: from hammering,
obsessive abstract rhythms, we procede to more recent works characterized
by a quasi-representational central episode, and in which we are tempted
to read the thickening of color, its sudden liquefactions, the delicate
shimmerings (the "purple mists" mentioned in the title of the present
exibition), as if they were galaxies in condensation, black depths of
vulcans, lava which flows to the sea raising thick clouds of vapors.
We are reminded some of the visionary landscapes of the Romantic age here.
A pictorial world, as one can see, in full exuberant movement...
