Black Maria, a new gallery dedicated to non-mainstream and underground art, will open in Atwater Village on May 7.
Black Maria will feature recent works by Los Angeles artists Thomas Lee Bakofsky, Frieda Gosset, Pamela Henderson, Sophia Gasparian, Samvel Saghatelian, Mark Todd, Esther Pearl Watson, Jaime Zollars, Frieda Gossett, Jeff Morgan and Loraine Villarreal.
The gallery will serve as a launching pad and point of convergence for a wide spectrum of artistic energies that reflect the diverse communities of Los Angeles and beyond. In selecting the artists for Black Maria, the criteria is a certain quality of raw, underground, personal works with a sense of social and political consciousness.
Black Maria’s focus will be on works that reverberate with the shock of the content; not in a gratuitous sense, but in a way that initiates wonderment and self-reflection, and, ultimately, a measure of enlightenment. The gallery will be specializing in art that, despite being of undeniable technical and substantive merit, might be deemed too unorthodox or obscure by big-name galleries or museums.
