The University Museum and Art Gallery and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong are delighted to celebrate this year's French May with an exhibition of three artists who exemplify a rich tradition of artistic cross-pollination across the East/West cultural divide.

Entitled Encre/Chine: Ink paintings by Jean Degottex, Gao Xingjian and T'ang Haywen, this exhibition highlights the achievements of three artists working in the Chinese medium of ink on paper. T'ang Haywen (1927¡V1991), and the renowned playwright and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000, Gao Xingjian (1940¡V), are both Chinese artists who, having settled in France, play upon the abstract qualities of ink painting to produce works that blur the divisions between the idioms of either Chinese or western modern art. The generous artistic environment of France has embraced influences from cultures as divergent as Africa and Japan in its own artistic journey, but has proven to be particularly open to artists from China. The French artist Jean Degottex (1918¡V1988), like his compatriot Henri Michaux, was influenced by the art, philosophy and literature of the east and found in ink painting a medium that could synthesise the complexities of his experiences in art, and his experimentations in abstraction.

Over fifty works by the three artists are included in this exhibition showing how they have used the medium, or indeed the idea, of ink in depicting profound expressions of the human condition. In the work of T'ang Haywen, however, there will also be examples of his vibrant, joyful watercolour compositions. A fully illustrated catalogue of T'ang's work will be produced in conjunction with this exhibition.
