included in Prints by the Masters at M. Hanks Gallery.
Most of the best African American artists also are printmakers. Indeed, some
of their most powerful statements are made in this medium. For example, in
1946 and 1947 Elizabeth Catlett, under a Julius Rosenwald grant, executed
her famous I am the Black Woman series, depicting the various contributions
to American society made by African American women. Two linocuts from that
series are included in this show.
Also included in the exhibition is a portrait of a mysterious man named
Vincent by Ed McCluney, an etching by Romare Bearden showing a small band
playing jazz, and an etching executed in 1910 by Henry Tanner that depicts
the Disciples watching Jesus walk on water.
