Paintings by Pieter Swanepoel & Emma Willemse
Two Gauteng artists, PIETER SWANEPOEL & EMMA WILLEMSE, who also teach art,
are having a two-person show at Artspace in Fairland. These two artists
will be displaying their works in an exhibition entitled "DWARSDEUR". It
will include surface paintings and works on doors in mixed media.
In Pieter Swanepoel’s paintings marks, scratches, spills and other
blemishes that often appear on the surface of the painted surfaces, that is
on top of the varnishes, become part of the visual language of his works. He
consistently seeks for and experiments with ways that would interfere with
traditional notions of the pictorial conventions of easel paintings in order
to construct artworks that he refers to as "deconfigured paintings."
Emma Willemse uses doors as a found object in her artwork. Taken out of
context, deconstructed and exhibited, they become the evidence / trace /
remnant of mundane rituals of transition. The door as a found object and a
symbol of transition becomes the object of desire for the artist. It
becomes a document of "how we reach the other side."

LAUNCH OF "MIDDELMAN"
"Middelman" explores the theme of the sceptical, middle-aged man, finding
himself amidst many things surrounding him, on a very visual journey through
religious, political, and interpersonal landscapes. Rudolph’s professional
career over twenty years as a lawyer has been focused on the drafting of
statutes and the structuring of mechanisms and institutions facilitating
access to financial services, and housing finance in particular, for low
income people. His first volume of poetry, Kweekskool , was published in
1982.
