Fathom

The Hatton Gallery, Newcastle

Bill Viola, David Cotterrell, Janet Biggs, Martyn Ware & Vince Clarke, Robin Petterd. Composed of breathtaking video installations which dominate each room, the show will plunge the viewer into an environment which is at once both calm yet uneasy. This experiential immersion will reflect the range of emotions associated with being in water; the freedom and release of floating, the comfort of being held and enveloped, the fear of loss, isolation and the unknown, the surrender of control and the implication of drowning.

Composed of breathtaking video installations which dominate each room, Fathom will plunge the viewer into an environment which is at once both calm yet uneasy. This experiential immersion will reflect the range of emotions associated with being in water; the freedom and release of floating, the comfort of being held and enveloped, the fear of loss, isolation and the unknown, the surrender of control and the implication of drowning.

The exhibition features the work of 5 contemporary artists, all at the cutting edge of new media installation:

David Cotterrell

Latitude (2005)
Panoramic video projection
Originally commissioned by Parabola in early 2005, Latitude presents its audience with a ‘simulation’ of Captain William Bligh’s historic 5,800km open boat journey taken in the HMS Bounty’s lifeboat. Directly informed by the anecdotal and navigational notes from Bligh’s log, Cotterrell’s panoramic first-person view, not unlike a flight simulator, charts the shifting horizon witnessed by Bligh and his companions on their travels after the mutiny. Made possible by the Marine Simulation Unit at South Tyneside College, who generously allowed the artist access to predictive wave modelling programs, Latitude works on a massive scale to immerse viewers in the drama of the storms, calm seas and fogs of the crew’s epic journey.

Blue: you are under water (2001)
Sound installation
Illustrious Co. Ltd. was founded by Martyn Ware and Vince Clarke in 2001 to develop the creative and commercial possibilities of their unique 'Heightened Reality' 3D sound technology. Blue (you are under water) features on their 2001 album Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle. The concept for the album developed from Ware's interest in lighting design. They wanted to ally sounds to colour and mood, creating an experiential environment. Ware descibes the album as a "soundtrack to an imaginary film".

Bill Viola

The Messenger (1996)
Video installation
The name Bill Viola has become synonymous with the development of new media art. Since the 1970s, Viola has adopted video as his chosen medium for exploring themes of birth, death and the human condition. The enormity of the physical projection alongside its emotive imagery almost overwhelm the viewer whilst maintaining an intimacy which is difficult to describe until the work has been experienced first hand.

Janet Biggs

Water Training (1997)
Two channel video installation.
Janet Biggs is one of many contemporary artists who began to work with video in the early 1990s. Her works are entrancing in their beauty and disturbing honesty. In Water Training land based mammals are seen adapting with more or lesser success to an aquatic environment. The inversion of the underwater swimmers and panic expressed on the horse's face combine to create an disorientating alien scene.

Robin Petterd

Dropping (2002)
Linear video installation.
"Dropping suggests the sensory experience of floating at the surface and then diving down to be fully submerged. Humans can react in the water like sea mammals such as whales, slowing down to a meditative state and using less oxygen. It is this physical reaction to submersion, of slowing down, and the contrast to floating on the surface and being pushed around by the water that is the focus of Dropping." Robin Petterd.
