Straight Lines Are Curves From Very Large Circles. The main gallery space will be occupied by a single sculptural piece. The work consists of uniform sheets of mirror-polished steel, sitting on polystyrene panels, onto which the artist places manufactured elements, signifiers of elements of the language of nature. Ireland will also install a new sculptural piece in the second gallery.
Straight Lines Are Curves From Very Large Circles
f a projects is pleased to announce the second solo show at the gallery of
work by James Ireland.
Since his participation in New Contemporaries in 2000, Ireland has become
known for his sculptural practice which combines the language of landscape
painting with the formal conventions of minimalist sculpture. For this
exhibition, and for the first time in London, the artist will exhibit a
large-scale sculptural work. Previous works on this scale include Any Way
That You Want Me, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, USA, and All Of The
Known Universe, Spike Island, Bristol.
Ireland’s ongoing project concerns the creation and examination of a syntax
of representation of landscape. He takes the physical geographic phenomena
which have been considered as components of landscape throughout the history
of its representation, and develops a system of signs to denote them, using
found household and manufactured objects – a plastic bucket, pipe and pump
for a waterfall, a twig for forest, images cut from books or magazines to
represent a sunrise or sunset. While in his earlier work these objects
combined to form an illusion of a landscape scene, now that desire in the
viewer is frustrated; the system of referents has moved from the pictorial
to the conceptual.
The main gallery space will be occupied by a single sculptural piece,
Straight Lines Are Curves From Very Large Circles. The work consists of
uniform sheets of mirror-polished steel, sitting on polystyrene panels, onto
which the artist places manufactured elements, signifiers of elements of the
language of nature. Straight Lines Are Curves From Very Large Circles was
commissioned by Angel Row Gallery for Ireland’s recent solo exhibition, This
Is A Test.
Ireland will also install a new sculptural piece in the second gallery, made
specifically for the space.
James Ireland’s recent exhibitions include This Is A Test, Angel Row,
Nottingham (solo exhibition); Scape, CAC Vilnius, Lithuania; Into My World:
Recent British Sculpture, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, USA. Upcoming
exhibitions include La Galerie, Centre d'art contemporain, Noisy-le-Sec,
France.
