An exhibition of found object sculpture. Matt Calderwood, Man Ray, Boo Ritson and Jorge Sosa.
Ad Hoc is a group show of found object sculpture. The exhibition takes as a
starting point Man Ray's iconic sculpture Le Cadeau (1921/1974) "We passed a
shop where various household utensils were spread out in front. I picked up
a flat-iron, the kind used on coal stoves and asked Satie to come inside
with me, where, with his help, I acquired a box of tacks and a tube of glue.
Back at the gallery I glued a row of tacks to the smooth surface of the
iron, titled it, The Gift, and added it to the exhibition.''
The sculpture went missing that day. Man Ray remade it several times
throughout his career.
This instinctive, playful and inquisitive approach to objects is reflected
in the work of the other artists in this show. They all put together objects
without denying their source or original function but similarly transform
them into a new, singular thing. These additions and interventions form
objects as images.
Matt Calderwood makes video and sculpture. The sculptures utilise practical,
everyday objects such as brooms, shovels and crates. These objects come to
rely on each other to form the finished piece. They are interdependent
within the sculpture, existing to support one another and create a balance
or equilibrium. The sculptures depend on a co-operation between the
individual objects to achieve a goal.
Jorge Sosa is an artist from Mexico. His work derives from the streets and
markets of Mexico City. Each work registers the coexistence of diverse
cultural practices, with objects from various political, economical and
ideological roots brought together.
Boo Ritson takes found objects which are then over-painted. This act
flattens the objects, turning them into idealized tropes of themselves. The
objects take on a cartoon like quality, simplifying their surfaces and
turning the objects into images.
Matt Calderwood has recently shown at the Saatchi Gallery, London, Hugh Lane
Gallery, Dublin and Tate Britain, London. He will have a solo show at David
Risley Gallery in October 2005.
Jorge Sosa is an artist and curator of Ex-Teresa, Mexico City. Before
studying fine art he trained as an architect. He writes regularly for
several Mexican publications. This is his first show in Europe.
Boo Ritson recently graduated from the Royal College of Art. She has
forthcoming exhibitions at De Fabriek, Eindhoven in August 2005 and Mark
Moore Gallery, Santa Monica in October 2005
Man Ray, photographer, painter, and maker of objects and films was one of
the most versatile and inventive artists of the 20th century. Born in
Philadelphia in 1890, he worked in New York before moving to Paris in the
1920's and 1930's, where he played a key role in the Dada and Surrealist
movements. He lived in Hollywood during the 1940s, where he joined others
chased by war from their homes in Europe and finally, Paris again until his
death in 1976.
