Doug Aitken

Regen Projects, Los Angeles

For this exhibition, the artist will exhibit an 11 channel video work titled 'The moment' (2005). 11 plasma screens suspended from the gallery ceiling are fixed with mirrors at the back of each screen. The mirrors reflect the surrounding images pulsing in a spiral through the space. Each screen depicts a figure in isolation, seemingly vulnerable; asleep or upon awakening.

comunicato stampa

Regen Projects is pleased to announce Doug Aitken's first solo gallery exhibition in Los Angeles. Aitken has become known for such elaborate multi-screen environments as, "electric earth," which won him the International Prize in the 48th Venice Biennale. "electric earth" follows a young man's journey through L.A.'s desolate nightscape of neon-lit stores and empty parking lots. In many of Aitken's works, the viewer is immersed in a dreamlike environment tracing the path of the isolated individual within the matrix of the contemporary landscape. Through deft editing of image and sound, Aitken wrestles with the subjective nature of the experience of time. Aitken's works have taken place in such culturally loaded sites as Jonestown in Guyana, Africa's diamond mines, and India's Bollywood. Aitken encircles the viewer with images of beauty drawn from the web of civilization, and presents a hyperreal reflection of contemporary life.

For this exhibition, Aitken will exhibit an eleven channel video work titled, The moment (2005). Eleven plasma screens suspended from the gallery ceiling are fixed with mirrors at the back of each screen. The mirrors reflect the surrounding images pulsing in a spiral through the space. Each screen depicts a figure in isolation, seemingly vulnerable; asleep or upon awakening. Repeated images of subtle movements and gestures form a rhythm which builds and expands, not unlike a musical landscape. Each movement or moment is its own note, affecting the whole. The phrases “I want to be every place.” and “Then it starts again.” are repeated over the stream of images, as if part of a collective subconscious.

Doug Aitken has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. Solo exhibitions have been organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, the Kunsthalle Zurich, the Louisiana Museum in Denmark, and the Serpentine Gallery in London.

Publications include: Doug Aitken A-Z Book (Fractals) published by The Fabric Workshop, new ocean published by The Serpentine Gallery, Doug Aitken published by Phaidon Press, notes for new religions, notes for no religions published by the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, I AM A BULLET published by Random House, diamond sea published by Book Works, and Metallic Sleep published by Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokyo.

The opening reception for Doug Aitken will take place on Saturday September 10th from 6 - 8pm.
