Goya - Prophet of Modernism

Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin

In cooperation with the Museo Nacional del Prado, the Nationalgalerie, State Museums of Berlin and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, are proud to present the first comprehensive display of works by Spanish artist, Francisco de Goya, ever shown in the German-speaking world. Renowned as a painter, drawer, etcher and lithographer, Goya is esteemed as one of the greatest Spanish artists of all time. Over 80 key paintings from international collections will be on view at the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) for a period of three months. The exhibition centres on Goya and his role as the major Spanish precursor of European Modernism.

The exhibition is the result of a longstanding and close collaboration with the Museo Nacional del Prado. Having loaned 30 works - paintings, drawings, autographs - the museum is the principal lender, as well as the art-historical backbone of this illustrious exhibition. It is thanks to the excellent relationships fostered by the Prado that some 21 paintings in addition to 3 very rarely exhibited ivory works from private collections can be shown in the context of this exhibition.
From the early work of Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746 - 1828), a painter hungry for fame and official commissions, to the pinnacle of his career as first painter to the court, to the period during which the ailing, reclusive artist resided at the Quinta del Sordo, to his flight into French exile, to the final years of his life - each of the master’s creative periods are lavishly represented in this exhibition. The broad scope of exhibited works illustrates the multifaceted oeuvre of the artist, which, comprising history painting, genre painting, portraiture and still life, spans almost every genre of the fine arts.
With a view to revealing Goya’s pioneering role in the history of art, the exhibition foregrounds the contrast between his officially commissioned works, many of which are strongly influenced by the court tradition of Rococo, and the cabinet pictures or works on paper, in which Goya’s modernity is immediately conspicuous.
The survey of works by Spain’s greatest 19th-century painter at the Alte Nationalgalerie will be framed by a display of 19th-century German art including works by Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Blechen and Karl Friedrich Schinkel, alongside a selection of works by Edouard Manet and Claude Monet, the key protagonists of French art during the same period.
The exhibition was made possible through the support - financial and organisational - of the Verein der Freunde der Nationalgalerie. Media partners working to publicize the project beyond the borders of Berlin are ZDF aspekte, Klassik Radio and the Berliner Zeitung. The exhibition is on view at the Alte Nationalgalerie from 13 July until 3 October 2005, after which time it will tour to Vienna.
