Sale. Furniture, papier-mache' sculpture and a new form of outdoor sculpture
Gagosian Gallery is delighted to present "Sale," Franz West's first major commercial gallery exhibition in Los Angeles. The exhibition will include many of West's signature pieces, including furniture (new tables, chairs and lamps), papier-mâché sculpture and, for the first time, a new form of outdoor sculpture made of polyester which the artist refers to as 'amphibious' – as they can float on water.
Born in 1947, Franz West is both heir to the "Aktionisten" and godfather of current young Viennese movements. He therefore provides a crucial link among central European art practices of the last few decades. West also has collaborated with California artist Mike Kelley.
West has participated in several Venice Biennales and has had numerous museum exhibitions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute, Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the MAK, Schindler House, Los Angeles; Mass MoCA, North Adams, MA; the Whitechapel Gallery, London; Reina Sofia, Madrid and currently has a long term installation at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY.
The exhibition will open with a short address by Peter Noever, CEO and Artistic Director of the MAK Vienna and Los Angeles.
"Standard," 2005, an example of one of the amphibious sculptures, will be on view on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Rexford Drive in Beverly Hills throughout the fall.
Opening reception for the artist: Friday, September 9th 6 – 8pm
