The British School at Rome, Roma

comunicato stampa

This is the third exhibition of the 1999-2000 academic year presenting the work of artists resident at the British School.
"Head Height" is an installation by Australia Council Resident Artist Alex Gawronski which represents some of the ideas on which he has been working on during his three-month residency in Rome.

HEAD HEIGHT
"As a city Rome exists on multiple levels physically, historycally and socially. To immerse oneself in the multiple lives of a city such as Rome with its extensive and continually lived history, especially coming from a country like Australia with its comparative brief history of European settlement is to see an image of Western culture as if for the first time.
However what is seen is at least partially apprehended in advance. The history of Rome is equally the Mythology of a place that is constantly reproduced and revitalised. Therefore as an Australian I already have an image in my mind of the myth of Rome, the "eternal city". Through this exhibition, I am interested to explore as much the physical mechanics of the representation of place as the slippage's that occur, on-site when viewing the city for the first time. Rome's skyline of aerials present an atypical vision of Rome, home of the Colosseum. Yet through the already outdated and eminently palpable technology of these aerials, Rome's history is assured through its constant representation. Similarly this continuity is guaranteed globally as the ghost of the city's multiple lives". (Alex Gawronski)
