comunicato stampa

This October Rokeby is home to Misdemeanours, Craig Fisher’s largest and most adventurous exhibition to date.

Taking over the ground floor of the gallery Fisher sews a trail of contraventions culminating in a malleable life size car crash made entirely from vehicle upholstery and the artist’s dexterous stitch work. Dodging the sequence of events the viewer must first negotiate floral barricades and handcrafted pools of vomit amongst other misdemeanours. Suggesting no definitive narrative the artist leaves you to complete the scene. Wall paintings of cartoon speech bubbles ask to be filled with text, however these speech bubbles are replaced with hand painted textile patterns as selected by the artist; herringbones sit beside Japanese prints supplanting a possible Pow, Wham or Bam. Elsewhere an Assassin’s weapons are bound in a meticulously stitched blanket and larger than life knives are lodged into the backs of doors; the knife handles sparkling with sequins.

Fisher is fascinated by the pursuit of the stitch and the exclusive territory that it often holds. The fabrics are carefully selected by the artist, for the values associated with them; these are then displaced within macho territory and embellished with decorative stitch work and delicate detailing. In juxtaposing fabric and craft with images of violence Fisher subverts the significance of masculinity and contemporary technology.

Fisher is concerned with the seductive image of an object and the way in which we receive them. In his work he highlights the difference between the real object and the image of that object, working in what Fisher refers to as “the space in between”. Challenging our habits of viewing Craig Fisher’s work is located outside of boundaries, unidentifiable as any one thing, discipline, state or position, be it image or object.

Exhibited alongside the sculptural work and installations are drawings and wall paintings seen for the first time in the UK. Craig Fisher graduated from Goldsmiths College in 2000 where he was awarded a Saatchi Fellowship. He recently completed a further fellowship at Ecole Cantonale d’art du Valais, Switzerland. Recent exhibitions include a solo show in Switzerland, the Crafts Council’s Boys Who Sew and Aftermath a solo exhibition at Studio Voltaire, London. He has previously exhibited at K3 Project Space, Zurich, Cell Project Space, London, Galerie Zurcher, Paris and Nylon, London. Craig Fisher is represented by Rokeby Gallery.
