We watch as fog moves over a mountain, aspens quake in the wind, the sun flickers on
a forest. In Megan McLarney's art, these minimal moments are examined with exacting
scrutiny. Megan McLarney is an artist obsessed with recording. For the past six
years, McLarney has developed a unique method of documenting both the natural and
man-made landscape. Her technique involves using a stationary video camera to shoot
overlapping exposures at a specific location. The footage is then combined in
post-production to construct a panoramic view with more detail than one could
possibly capture with a single shot. This unique perspective allows us to see what
may have previously been overlooked. What was once incidental now becomes
significant. Whether it is in the form of a multi-monitor video or a series of
photographic prints, it is this subtle change in perception that is the basis for
all McLarney's art.
Megan McLarney was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri and has been living and
working in New York City since 1997. In April 2002, McLarney had her first solo
exhibition at the Oni Gallery in Boston and in June 2002, she had her first solo
exhibition, in New York City, at the Florence Lynch Gallery. McLarney has also
participated in various group exhibitions, including the show 'Schools of Thought'
at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. McLarney was a MacDowell
Colony artist-in-residence in 2003, a Yaddo artist-in-residence in 2004, and a
recipient of a prestigious space grant from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation
from 2004-2005. McLarney is currently participating as a finalist in the Los Angeles
Airport multi-monitor public art commission for the Tom Bradley International
Terminal. McLarney holds a BFA in Film, Animation, & Video from the Rhode Island
School of Design.
