Solo show
Born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1970, Hussein Chalayan is one of the most innovative,
experimental and conceptual fashion designers of our time. Taking his inspiration
from such varied sources as architecture, philosophy and anthropology, he has
created an oeuvre that lies on the border between fashion and contemporary art.
Chalayan’s work often focuses on cultural and social themes: this may be related to
the particular biography of the artist, whose identity has been shaped by the
combination of different cultures. In the past 10 years Hussein Chalayan has
produced more than twenty collections, the most important of which are presented in
this exhibition in the form of outfits, installations, photographic images and video
pieces. The exhibition was conceived by the Groninger Museum (NL).
Hussein Chalayan is currently representing Turkey at the 51st Biennale di Venezia
(12 June–6 November 2005).
