Mario Sala

Central to Mario Sala's work is a deep belief in the ability of human beings to both alter and expand our perception of reality. In his work Sala often gives added fluidity of expression to his thoughts and ideas through the inclusion of an anonymous figure known as the Drifter.

Sexless and ageless, the Drifter appears in almost all of Sala's work and in Built in London embarks with each viewer on a fabulous voyage of discovery.

In Built in London Sala transforms 400Sq.m of the gallery space into two separate environments: one relating to our concrete experience of daily life, and the other aiming to heighten our awareness of self.

The installation combines photography, painting, slide projection and incorporates old car bonnets and car roof as well as Sala's own sculptures.

Mario Sala was born in 1965 in Winterthur, Switzerland, where he lives and works.

Built in London, an installation by Mario Sala has been supported in part by Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland.

Tuesday 25 October 2005: Vincent Katz and Tim Atkins will read from their own works

Vincent Katz is a poet, art critic, translator and editor. He is the author of eight books of poetry. His most recent publication is his translation from the Latin of The Complete Elegies of Sextus Propertius, 2004. He is the editor of the poetry and arts journal Vanitas and of Libellum books. Katz also writes frequently on contemporary art and has curated several exhibitions, including Black Mountain College: Experiment in Art. He lives in New York.

Tim Atkins has published several books and chapbooks as well as contributing to journals and anthologies such as FOIL: An Anthology of New British Writing (2000). He is also a creative writing teacher and designer and co-editor of the on-line poetics journal onedit.net. Atkins has taught in Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, and New York but now lives and works in his native London.
