comunicato stampa

Chris Burden
MCASD LA JOLLA
SEPTEMBER 18, 2005 THROUGH JANUARY 1, 2006

Featuring over four decades of work made by artists from Los Angeles to the Mexican border, Southern Exposure draws from MCASD's permanent collection to showcase the diversity and aesthetic innovation of contemporary art making in the region. Certain subjects and artistic techniques developed specifically in response to a Southern California location, including: the light and space movement, urban/suburban themes, interest in border, beach and car culture, as well as counterculture movements. While some of this art is politically motivated, some is concerned primarily with formal considerations.

Highlights from the exhibition include works by John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, Robert Irwin, Chris Burden, Alexis Smith, Eleanor Antin, Ruben Ortiz Torres, and Daniel J. Martinez, among others. Younger generations of Los Angeles-based artists whose studio practice has been impacted by these influential artists will be shown, while San Diego's local artist community will be well represented.

Southern Exposure is made possible by the Cochrane Exhibition Fund. The Gallery Guide is supported by Maryanne and Irwin Pfister. Support for related public programs comes from the estate of Edith Barton. Additional support comes from contributors to MCASD's Annual Fund and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.

Raymond Pettibon
MCASD LA JOLLA
SEPTEMBER 18, 2005 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2006

Los Angeles-based artist Raymond Pettibon, known for his idiosyncratic renderings and room-sized installations, has created a large-scale wall drawing in the galleries. Pettibon’s loose, illustration-like drawings combine pop culture and a comic-book style with allusions to art history and literature. Pettibon’s work often shows the darker sides of society as he points out American hypocrisies. In the 1970s, Pettibon produced record covers and other promotional materials for Los Angeles punk rock bands like Black Flag, giving him an almost cult-like following. Since then, Pettibon’s unique use of text brings satire and irony to a wide range of subjects including surfing, J. Edgar Hoover, the Bible, Charles Manson, and Gumby.

Portia Hein
SEPTEMBER 18, 2005 THROUGH JANUARY 1, 2006
MCASD LA JOLLA

MCASD commissioned Los Angeles-based artist Portia Hein to create a new installation in the Museum's cafe space as part of the Southern Exposure exhibition. Hein makes flat, abstract compositions in quiet colors that suggest plant life and landforms, but go beyond nature into worlds of her own creation. She explores fragility in her ongoing series of landscape paintings, depicting plants in all phases of growth and decay that are based, in part, on a year-round observation of Echo Park Lake, near her home. Her imagery, which is composed of controlled stains and wavering, watery lines, embodies a delicate elegance, relating to the fleeting nature of beauty.

This is her first Museum commission and residency. The project is part of a series of temporary exhibitions in the Museum's cafe space, which include focused looks at single artists, works from MCASD's permanent collection, and commissioned installations. In the Cafe: Portia Hein is supported by a generous contribution from Dr. Charles C. and Sue K. Edwards.

WriterzBlok
MCASD DOWNTOWN / JACOBS BUILDING CONSTRUCTION FENCE
SEPTEMBER 1 through december 11, 2005

WriterzBlok is a non-profit collective of artists that offers the youth of southeast San Diego technical skills in the visual arts and opportunities to learn more about aerosol painting through a series of educational programs. This fall, the group's work will be featured at MCASD Downtown. The Museum will exhibit murals by some of WriterzBlok's artists in the lobby and Fayman Galleries, augmenting their work across the street, the banner project on the Museum's Jacobs Building construction fence on Kettner Boulevard. This outdoor installation, the group's largest ever, is a timeline of diverse artistic styles used by aerosol artists since the 1970s. Artists participating in these projects include Daze, Chor, Huge, Nemo, Brian Lagemann, Kuya, Zodak and Sake, and Zone.

WriterzBlok On the Wall is supported by a generous grant from The Legler Benbough Foundation.

Barbara Kruger
MCASD downtown
OCTOBER 1 THROUGH DECEMBER 11, 2005

Twelve, a new video installation by Barbara Kruger, will open this fall at MCASD Downtown. The installation addresses the themes of power, society, culture, family, and relationships that have been integral to Kruger's work since the late 1970s. Projected individually onto the four walls of the Copley Gallery, actors in twelve ensembles carry on conversations across the space. In conversations scripted by Kruger, the actors speak in mundane settings that become the flash point for suppressed emotions.

Kruger is the 2005 recipient of the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement award from the Venice Biennale. She is a Professor of Visual Arts at the University of California San Diego.
