Events: In Fair

Frieze Projects
Now in its third year, the Frieze Projects programme is recognized as a high profile public arts commissioning opportunity for artists.

The programme encourages the involvement of artists in the physical and conceptual framework of the fair, and for several artists it provides their first opportunity to realize a significant project in the UK.

In 2005 the Frieze Projects programme will be expanded and developed in a new direction to encompass more physically ambitious sculptural projects; film and video commissions – presented in a micro cinema – and a daily performance programme.
The programme is curated by Polly Staple who has commissioned artists including Jeremy Deller, Pae White, Los Super Elegantes, Roman Ondak and Tatham + O’Sullivan for previous Frieze Projects.

Frieze Talks
Frieze Art Fair 2005 will also maintain its series of talks and discussions. These will feature international curators, critics, collectors and artists, who will debate issues arising from the production and collecting of contemporary art.

Panel members in 2004 included Richard Flood, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Walker Art Centre; Beatrix Ruf, Director/Curator of the Kunsthalle Zurich, Andrew Renton, Director, Curatorial Programme, Goldsmiths’ College, and Columnist, Evening Standard, the collector Harald Falkenberg, and the artists Jeremy Deller, Christian Jankowski, Trisha Donnelly, Haim Steinbach and David Robbins. Discussions ranged from the future of the museum, to ideas surrounding the new in contemporary art and the psychology of collecting.

Frieze Music
Curated by Dan Fox, Associate Editor of frieze and musician Steve Mackey, Frieze Music aims to assemble a programme exploring the common areas between music and culture.
The innovative 2004 programme helped to pioneer some of the most celebrated bands of 2005, culminating in a night curated by Franz Ferdinand which included The Kills and the Kaiser Chiefs.

Frieze Art Fair Special Acquisitions Fund to Benefit the Tate Collection

Launched in partnership with Tate; The Frieze Art Fair’s Special Acquisitions Fund was established to enable Tate to purchase the newest and most exciting contemporary art for the Tate Collection. The fund is organised by Candida Gertler and Yana Peel, who are London collectors and Tate patrons. They have raised the fund from a group of London collectors. The amount of funding available for 2005 will be confirmed in the coming months.
Last year the Special Acquisitions Fund totalled £150,000, which helped secure the works of Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane, Pavel Althamer, Martin Boyce, Jesper Just, Mark Leckey, Scott Myles, Frank Nitsche, Henrik Olesen, Roman Ondák, The Atlas Group / Walid Reed and Pae White for the Tate Collection.

Gallery Events

To coincide with Frieze Art Fair 2005, public and commercial galleries throughout London will be holding special events and exhibitions to join in the celebration of art in the capital.

The organisers will publish a yearbook to coincide with Frieze Art Fair 2005. This will act as both a fair catalogue and as a snapshot of contemporary art now. Each gallery can recommend two artists for inclusion in the Frieze Art Fair Yearbook.
