comunicato stampa

PILOT is an initiative led by artists, created in 2004, and designed as a live forum where independent visual arts professionals could meet their international counterparts in a unique discursive environment. PILOT provides an ongoing support network and annual large-scale independent forum for artists who do not have commercial representation.

This year, for PILOT:2, another one hundred prominent and emerging curators, critics, artists and collectors from across the globe have nominated their favourite unrepresented artist. The nominated artists are exhibiting work, contributing to an archive and will be present at the event.

PILOT:2 showcase
All nominated artists in PILOT:2 show one piece of work representative of their practice. The resulting exhibition is not curated in the traditional sense, but is rather an equal platform where each piece of work is an introduction to the entire oeuvre of each artist represented in the archive.

The PILOT archive
PILOT:2 centers around a hard-copy archive, containing comprehensive documentation and information about each featured artist, as well as including the entire updated archive from PILOT:1, for visitors to research. DVDs of work will also be available to watch on the archive monitors. PILOT also aims to continue supporting its participating artists beyond the dates of the event by constantly updating the online archive at pilotlondon.org, and by managing the hard-copy archive held at Old Limehouse Town Hall, London, which is viewable by appointment.

Talks program *free, no booking required
Saturday 22nd October, 7-9pm
Artist-Run: An Exhausted Mode?
This first session will look at the validity of the term 'artist-run'. Does this model for self-representation still have currency, and if so, do initiatives that claim this status operate in a significantly different way to other arts organisations? Are 'artist-run' initiatives able to effect institutional critique? Is the term just branding? Are there genuine benefits to being artist-run?
Speakers: Chris Hammond, Director, MoT; Lise Nellemann, Sparwasser HQ, Berlin; Dallas Seitz, Artist & Director, 1,000,000mph projects; and, John Timberlake, Artist.

Sunday 23rd October 7-9pm
Artists' Networks, Communities, and Independence
We call ourselves artists, curators, art critics and theorists. Do we really want to be part of the networks of the 'art world' though? The following speakers will discuss autonomy and artistic, social and economic systems.
Speakers: Anna Harding, Independent Curator; John Reardon, Artist; Liliane Schneiter, Postgraduate study PROGRAM CCC, Esba, Geneva; and, Roman Vasseur, Artist.

Monday 24th October 6-8pm
Critics' Choice - Live Review
A small panel of art critics and writers are invited to discuss selected works in the exhibition part of the PILOT:2 event. They will also give their thoughts on the project as a whole.
Speakers: Aileen Corkery, Curator; Martin Herbert, Critic & Art Historian; Jessica Lack, Art Critic for The Guardian & i-D; Suhail Malik, Writer and Course Leader, Postgraduate Fine Art Critical Studies, Goldsmiths College; and, Sally O'Reilly, writer and co-editor of Implicasphere.
