(un)dressed Body in the Baltic Photo Art

Group Exhibition

The exhibition is a group show of seven Latvian artists representing different generations and demonstrating diverse approach to the representation of body. In the context of Latvian contemporary photography the body is mainly instrumentalized as a medium to articulate conceptual messages instead of a self-sufficient object of exploration or desire.

Andrejs Grants (*1955) is one of the most prominent photographers in Latvia today. In the exhibited photographs he has documented performances of Latvian artists Andris and Inta Grinbergs in the end of the 1980s exploring relationship between the self and others by recording the attitude of randomly chosen persons to the naked model.

Arnis Balcus (*1978) will exhibit photographs and video work from the series “xionel” focusing on the role of the body in self-identification as a representative of gender. It provides a link to the unaestheticised reality of the brave new world of multicultural and multi-sexual identity.

Kriss Salmanis (*1977) uses human body as a canvas to write on a text in Latin, inspired by Arabic calligraphy, from the human rights amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia. His works serve as critical commentary on nationalist ideas in the context of a multicultural society.

Katrina Neiburga (*1978) explores relationships between generations within family. The bodies of women representing three age groups standing together are forming an archetypical Monster.

Anda Bankovska (*1971) is telling a story about two year period in her life together with her daughter Anna. The series of photographs resembles a diary allowing spectator to enter into the private territory of the artist.

Leonards Laganovskis (*1955) is following a purely conceptual approach and exploiting a naked body as a material for linguistic exercises.

Evelina Deicmane (*1978) has taken photos of persons whom she knows personally in their private space, where they can feel most comfortable and where they almost melt with the background of the environment. This series will be shown in 2006 at the 15th Biennale of Sydney.
