Sombras del sur y del Norte: Linea de Gente

Stephen Cohen Gallery announces the exhibition of 'Sombras del Sur y del Norte / Shadows from the South and the North,' a unique collection of heliographic images by photographer, video and installation artist Graciela Sacco, from November 10 to December 24, 2005. The show will open with a reception for the artist on November 10th from 7:00 to 9:00p.m.

Graciela Sacco is an internationally celebrated Argentinean artist known for the unique way she incorporates heliography, the imaging technique commonly used commercially in the creation of architectural blueprints, into her installation work.

Over the years, Sacco has refined her process, applying photosensitive emulsions onto "found" and discarded objects, then exposing both her own and appropriated images onto them to create emotionally compelling installations referencing political oppression. Often in her installations, images of rioting mobs or portraits of despair become fractured and are set in motion, producing disquieting new patterns of shadow and light, compelling the viewer to confront his own discomfort and the discomfort of these victims of governmental oppression and strife. This highly outspoken work seeks to explore the 'shadows' created by violation and domination occurring in both the southern and northern hemispheres.

Born in Rosario, Argentina in 1956, Sacco is heir to the avant-garde tradition of her native city where she continues to live and work today. Sacco earned a degree in fine arts from the University of Rosario. Sacco has represented Argentina at several Biennales including Venice 2001, Havana 2000 and 1997, and Sao Paulo 1996. She has recently exhibited at the 2004 Shanghai Biennale, the New World Museum in Houston (2004), and in Art Basel Miami (2004). Her work has been included in major exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world including Chile, Denmark, Argentina, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, England and France. For many years, Sacco has been Professor of Twentieth Century Latin American Art at the University of Rosario in Argentina and is currently a Master Artist in the residency program at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida.
