Group Exhibition

The Riverside Art Museum is proud to present “Flow,” a survey of abstract painting produced in southern California using paint that flows or creates flowing forms. Organized by Riverside Art Museum Senior Curator Peter Frank, “Flow” includes eleven area artists, established and emerging, who employ techniques that send pigment coursing freely across canvas – and panel, and paper.

Included in “Flow” are Charles Arnoldi, Philippa Blair, George Comer, Sheldon Figoten, Joe Goode, Daniel Kaufman, Linda King, Andy Moses, Ed Moses, Jennifer Wolf, and Suzan Woodruff.

“With the re-emergence of abstract painting,” writes Peter Frank, “artists are again exploiting the tendency of (thinned) paint to seep and to gush, to pool and to surge. We see a growing number of artists going with the flow, as it were.” Frank continues, “Until now, Southern California has not been a hotbed of gestural abstraction like this. But if we regard flow painting as a kind of process art, as an examination of what materials and substances do when placed in the context of visual experimentation, such painting falls right in with the region’s artistic tradition of investigating what stuff does.”

“Flow” was originally curated by Frank for Berman/Turner Projects in Santa Monica. A new, expanded version of the exhibition was organized for the Riverside Art Museum. Occupying both of the museum’s main galleries downstairs, “Flow” continues and expands the Riverside Art Museum’s commitment to art, both contemporary and historic, in the southern California region. As part of the Museum’s Monthly Art Forum Lecture Series, Senior Curator, Peter Frank will give an ART TALK on Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 7:00pm.

The Riverside Art Museum, located in historic downtown Riverside, occupies a beautiful historic building designed and built by Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan. The Mission of the Riverside Art Museum is to serve the various communities and diverse populations of the Inland Empire by providing visual art of the finest quality.
