Language and Horizons
Text artist Maurizio Nannucci was commissioned by Text Festival to produce a new work for Bury Art Gallery Museum and Archives and a major exhibition of his work launches at the Gallery from 19 November onwards.
Since the mid-1960s Maurizio Nannucci has been one of the leading figures of European contemporary art. His work explores the interrelations between language, writing and visual images, and employs a wide variety of media. Nannucci’s commission is on a circular foyer balcony so it reads as a cycle with the words: DIFFERENT LANGUAGES SAME PLACES DIFFERENT PLACES SAME CULTURES DIFFERENT CULTURES SAME HORIZONS.
For the exhibition, Nannucci has realised a special installation, which consists of four interrelated neon works in different colours. The installation refers to the spatial context of the Bury Art Gallery; the colours of the fluorescent neon texts evoke a new perception of the space, motivating the viewer to closely inspect and decode meaning in the entire work.
Maurizio Nannucci (born 1939, lives and works in Florence) is one of the most inventively experimental artists of the last three decades. Since the mid 1960s, Nannucci has devoted himself to exploring the multifaceted interrelations between language, writing and visual images, drawing on concepts and linguistic ideas and employing a wide variety of media, including photography, video, artist’s books, editions, sound installations. Searching for the artistic answers to a world in continuous change, he has developed an interdisciplinary approach of art practices, which opened up a network of co-operations in the fields of art, architecture, sound and poetry.
In addition to language he is keenly interested in colour in all its manifestations. As early as 1967 he began to create first neon “writingsâ€, adding a further dimension of meaning and sensual appeal to his work. With colourful, lighted installations the artist places word-images in a fluid circuit that flows between colour, sign and meaning. The artist uses coloured glass tubes and neon light, which have the effect of sharpening visual perception.
The variety of luminous configurations motivates the viewer to see and to interpret language as well as the spatial context in a new way. Documenting his linguistic research and colour-experiences Nannucci collects continuously his own writing in the work in progress “Anthology†(1967/ 2005...). In the early 90s, Nannucci started to collaborate with architects such as Fritz Auer, Mario Botta, Stephan Braunfels, Massimiliano Fuksas, Nicholas Grimshaw, Renzo Piano, and realized several projects for public buildings.
Maurizio Nannucci has participated several times in the Venice Biennale, at the Documenta Kassel, and in the Biennials of Sao Paulo, Sydney, Istanbul and Valencia; his works have been shown in over 400 exhibitions in Museums and galleries.

Notes to editors
Text Festival, the first major UK festival based on the idea that art can be read as poetry and poetry can be viewed as art, is presented in venues and sites across Bury, Lancashire. Text Festival challenges the boundaries between art and poetry, with a combination of text art and visual poetry. This ground-breaking festival spotlights works by renowned text artists like Lawrence Weiner and Maurizio Nannucci while also celebrating rarely seen but seminal text works by Bob Cobbing, Joseph Kosuth and a host of other international revolutionaries who challenge the insularity and limitation of the mainstream literary scene. A catalogue written by Text Festival organiser Tony Trehy is available. It controversially addresses the issues of text and poetry in contemporary poetics practice and international politics.
