The Aldrich Museum is pleased to exhibit new work by Janine Antoni, winner of the 1999 Larry Aldrich Foundation Award. This exhibition will feature work that was conceptualized during her residency this past year at the Wanas Foundation in Sweden. Wanas, located on a fully functional farm, provided inspiration for Antoni's recent series of pieces made from cowhide.

Antoni received critical acclaim during the early nineties for her installations and performances that focused on the female body as both object and subject.

Antoni's body was essential to the very fabricatio of many of her early works, yet in their final installation, the body is merely implied through residual markings. In Saddle (2000), the artist draped hereself with uncured rawhide that retained the shape of her body as it dried, drawing an overt parallel between her body and that of the cow. The body's presence is also indirectly suggested in other works in this series in which Antoni displays gloves, shoes, and backpacks as they appear to morph in to the very same hides from which these goods were produced.

Such works explore the role that these animales have had as providers for human society, akin to that of "mother." However, the surprising presence of raw hides in the gallery space reminds us that we often sacrifice those very beings upon which we rely so heavily, highlighting the delicate balance inherent to a consumer society.
