Csaba Toth, LolliPop Utopias: Girl Cultures, Clubbing, and Urban Space in Tokyo. While historical research on aspects of gender in Japan has been extensive, relations between girl culture and urban entertainments remains largely unexplored. The scant critique usually conflates infantilizing images of 'Asian' women's sexuality with musical incompetence and gives exploitative coverage to 'crazy' and 'out-of-control' young women roaming the streets in the Tokyo night. Based on years of field research, and with films, video clips, photos, and interviews updated via on-field ethnographic work, this talk will examine the interplay between Tokyo’s club culture, its most visible customers and their transgressive cultural practices.
