His first retrospective show held in Spain includes a selection
of works produced by Stephan Balkenhol (Fritzlar,
Germany, 1957) since the early eighties. At that time he was
completing his studies with teachers as Ulrich Rückriem,
while he began to explore the potential of wood as a material
for sculpture, and the ways of turning figurative representation
into an innovative expression ground. His figures - men,
women, dogs, lions, penguins, etc - open an on-going
dialogue with their surroundings, wich are turned into an
object of analysis, leading him to declare: "Those figures
interest me only when they involve their surrondings"
