I Was There
Andrea Meislin Gallery is pleased to announce Michal Heiman's first New York solo
exhibition entitled I Was There. Heiman has been teaching art and art criticism in
various Israeli universities and schools since 1997.
Through the years Heiman has collected and taken photographs from a variety of
sources ranging from known 19th century paintings to anonymous current newspapers.
Using these photographs as backdrop, Heiman incorporates text and her own portrait
to create new meanings. The result is a fusion of past and present, word and image.
These pictures address artistic, cultural, national and psychological issues. As a
result, they lend themselves to multiple readings, encouraging the viewer to give
free rein to his or her imagination.
I Was There and the related series have been shown widely - most recently in its
entirety in Arles, France at the annual festival that was curated this year by
Francois Hebel. Parts of the series were also featured in Exit Art's Terrorvision
(2004) and at Documenta X in Kassel, Germany (1997). Heiman is also a recipient of
the prestigious Enrique Kalvin photography prize awarded by the Israel Museum
(2003).
Ariella Azoulay, author of the exhibition essay, teaches visual culture and
contemporary philosophy at Bar-Ilan University. She is the winner of the 2002
Infinity Award for Writing presented by The International Center of Photography for
excellence in the field of photography. Azoulay's forthcoming book The Civil
Contract of Photography will be published by Zone Books.
An opening reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, December 8, from 6
p.m. until 8 p.m.
