Global Sisters
by Ivana Spinelli

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Directorate General for Cultural Promotion and Cooperation - the Italian Cultural Institute of New York together with the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University in New York, have established the Premio New York (“New York Prize") a scholarship program for emerging Italian artists. The artists in residence for the Fourth Edition of the New York Prize are SISSI and IVANA SPINELLI.

Suspended by Sissi, and Global Sisters by Ivana Spinelli are the second exhibition in the Italian Academy series “Italian Contemporary Art in New York". During the Opening Day of Premio New York 2005, the works of the artists Sissi and Ivana Spinelli will be displayed. Sissi's work will be visible during a performance in the theatre space and upon the neo-classical facade of the Italian Academy. Ivana Spinelli's works will be on display within the Academy's exhibition space.

Suspended is the title of the exhibition by Sissi. Two large cocoons of plastic material knitted by Sissi will occupy the traditional positions of the Academy's Italian and American flags. These organic shapes grow from within the building as roots and represent a natural extension that joins the artist's body with the architecture of the building. Sissi's work establishes a dynamic relationship and flow between the interior and exterior of the architecture of the Academy. A selection of Sissi's watercolors will also be displayed, and they will illustrate her substantial creative power and artistic skill.

Ivana Spinelli's work is presented through a series of drawings, a video, and a small canvas that depicts the Global Sisters symbol. The women shown within her work are representative of soldier and kamikaze-women stereotypes. The women are decorated with martial elements, representations that characterize two civilizations at war. The Global Sisters concept is set forth through views of imaginary TV situations similar to beauty pageants. This concept is the embodiment of a trademark that represents the first step toward a larger project, that will include the participation of additional artists, in the creation of serial objects, public interactions, video and media performances. www.global-pin-up.net

Italian Contemporary Art in New York, curated by Olivia D'Aponte and Laura Barreca, is a new series designed to bring the best of modern Italian art to New York audiences. Too often we regard Italy as the source of classical art and forget to focus on its rich artistic contributions of today. Italian Contemporary Art in New York offers a selection of Italian artists who have recently earned international recognition, all of whom have chosen a language connected to historical traditions of Italian art. The aim of this series is to demonstrate this "Italian style" within the context of American culture.
