Biennial of Moving Images.
The Pand&Monium 2001 Competition will present new artists' Single Screen work in the Lux Cinema between 2nd and 9th March 2001. Submissions are now closed.
Artists will be notified of the results of the selection process in January 2001. If selected, it is the artist's responsibility to deliver the work in a screenable format - not BETA NTSC - by 16 February 2001. The Lux does not accept any responsibility for loss or damage of preview material.
Pand&Monium 2001 will feature SIX NEW COMMISSIONS supported by the Arts Council of England National Touring Programme.
The artists are:
Mat Collishaw is a London-based artist who came to public attention as part of the now legendary Freeze show and has exhibited widely throughout Europe and America. His major new mixed media installation for Pand&Monium will combine animation, sculptural objects and digitally manipulated images. Grazia Toderi is a young Italian artist gaining an international reputation for her delicate, ethereal video installation work, which demonstrates a personal fascination with the aesthetics of urban social structures and networks. Her night-time installation for the Lux Gallery windows will continue her subtle manipulation of aerial views reordering the constellation of London's street lights to unique effect.
Miranda July is a multi-media performer and video artist based in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. In 1995 she founded Big Miss Moviola, a movie distribution network for independent women moviemakers. At the start of the year, she completed her fourth movie, "Nest of Tens", which premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
Uri Tzaig is an Israeli artist whose deceptively simple and playful observational work is infused with a sense of wonder.
Oliver Payne + Nick Relph are two young London-based filmmakers who have drawn much attention for their first two films, "Driftwood" and "House and Garage". Having focused on the inner city and suburbs respectively, their third film, "Jungle" will take them deep into the hinterland of the English countryside.
"Pand&Monium has quickly established a reputation as an exciting and surprising event, and The Arts Council is particularly pleased that its support not only allows the festival to commission new, innovative and challenging work, but will also provide audiences across the country the opportunity to see it." Gary Thomas, ACE Visual Arts Officer
