Works on Paper
Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present the first New York solo exhibition since 2002 of artist Dorothy Arnold.
For this exhibition Arnold presents a series of figure drawings which provide us a privileged view of her personal encounters, relationships, and continuous study of human behavior and form. Titles such as Pleased with myself, Grand Daddy & Colin, Red Beret, Mad Enough, fatuous, Obedience, Timorous, jack Jr., Defeated, Thoreau, and Assured, provide a clear narrative to the drawings and give an explicit indication of what matters to the artist, that is the one on one relationship with her subjects and the continued dialogue which passes on from one figure to the other.
Arnold’s own words best describes her approach towards her art:
To me visual art, music and words are all wondrous means of communication. My studio invariably has opera blaring forth. “Butterfly" withers on the stage. “Mimi" fades out. I sniffle. And then we all are lured and seduced by art, be it painting, drawing, photography or sculpture. Lastly, and perhaps the most relevant art comes in the guise of words: a poem, a book, a simple phrase with myriad meanings.
Art is for everyone.
